Historical Background.
Women for Peace, Justice and Climate Action (WOPCA) was started as a community based initiative in 2020 and subsequently registered as fully fledged Non Governmental Organization in 2020 after the signing of the peace agreement. The Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS), was finalized in September 2018. This quelled violent conflict in South Sudan, and ushered in a ‘transitional period’ that would lead to elections in 2024 (this has recently been extended two years). During the negotiation and execution of Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS), WOPCA played crucial role in conducting extensive civic education which included opening of civic space for citizen dialogue, constitution making process and amendment and conduct of general elections.
Since the establishment of Women for Peace, Justice and Climate Action (WOPCA), beneficiaries within communities and across have realized that promotion of grassroots initiatives for social, political and economic empowerment including involvement of vulnerable groups in process is key impetus for sustainable development.
